CLT training course highlights materialís potential

21 April 2017

The Institution Of Structural Engineers, London, will host the first of Exova BM TRADA and Austria’s Graz University of Technology jointly-designed course to help engineers, architects and contractors explore how cross-laminated timber (CLT) could be used in their next projects, its benefits and how to avoid the pitfalls.

TRADA members will benefit from a £50 discount off the £399 + VAT price in this one-day course, which covers everything from applications and benefits to member designs, stability, fire, bracing and connections.

Use of CLT in modern building systems is receiving positive comments from many building critics. CLT brings with it many advantages including a visually appealing structure, built-in fire resistance and fantastic green credentials.

Designed with engineers in mind, but also beneficial for architects, developers, contractors, building inspectors and timber frame manufacturers, the course provides practical information and expert advice.

Dr Keerthi Ranasinghe, Principal Structural Engineer at Exova BM TRADA, explained:  “The UK is currently one of the biggest users of CLT in Europe, yet there is incredible potential for the product in the mid-rise residential and commercial sectors where steel would usually be specified.

“It is one of the most exciting recent products to be used in buildings, and it will become an even more popular choice in the future as the industry realises the full potential of CLT.”

The Cross-Laminated Timber for Engineers course will be delivered by Dr Alexandra Thiel and Prof Reinhard Brandner from Graz University of Technology, Austria.

Available dates:

• 4 July 2017, The Institution Of Structural Engineers, London
• 5 July 2017, Chancellors, Manchester
